A company from South Tyrol seal

The “A company from South Tyrol seal is used in corporate communication for those companies working in the production and service sectors. The seal is used for co-branding for a joint brand presence and can only be used in connection with their letterhead.

The South Tyrol’s brand usage criteria & sectors

Tourism and related branches

Businesses working in tourism and related branches can use the South Tyrol brand as a co-branding tool by using the Badge and their business logo.

These sectors include:

tourism organisations, accommodation and catering businesses, events, holiday specialists, leisure activity providers, tourist information and brokerage platforms, tourist service providers, manufacturers of South Tyrolean promotional items with a licence agreement as well as institutions such as IDM South Tyrol and relevant regional authorities.

Natural cosmetics

If companies working in the cosmetics industry want to use the South Tyrol brand, the products’ main active principle must be proven to be and predominantly (at least 50%) from South Tyrol. If no suitable processing facilities exist in South Tyrol, processing may take place in plants outside the region (within Italy or the Alpine region). However, it is important that the manufacturer has their registered office in South Tyrol.

Required quality certification for natural cosmetics:

  • Proof of active principle confirmed by a laboratory
  • Registration in the EU portal for cosmetic products
  • A recognised certification (e.g. BDIH, ICADA, ECOCERT, COSMEBIO, ICEA, Abcert, Demeter, Natrue, Lacon, Austria Bio, Naturland, CSE, NCS)
  • A laboratory confirmation of requirement compliance

Craftsmanship

For products with a strong connection to South Tyrol—whether in craftsmanship and artisanal production, the timber industry, or refined goods—the key raw material must either be typical of South Tyrol and originate 100% from the region or the processing method must be characteristic of South Tyrol. The processing must take place in South Tyrol, and ideally, the product concept and design should also be developed there. The final product should convey the "South Tyrol experience."

Timber industry

South Tyrol is 50% covered by forests, making the timber industry a key economic sector. With approximately 19,000 jobs, it contributes 6.8% to the region’s GDP and generates around 1.7 billion euros. Wood as a building material is climate-relevant, as it binds CO₂ during growth and has a positive environmental footprint.

The South Tyrol brand is used by companies in the timber sector to signal quality, innovation, and sustainability. It represents reliability and high standards, appealing to customers who value expertise, craftsmanship, and sustainable products. Businesses benefit from the brand while simultaneously promoting sustainable values in the region.

Producers of PGI or PDO products

PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) and PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) seals of quality are awarded by the EU. They safeguard regional specialities from being copied and misused. The PGI label is used, among others, for South Tyrolean apples, South Tyrolean Speck and South Tyrolian Schüttelbrot, while the PDO label is used for South Tyrolean wine.

Producers use the labels and their respective logos for communication, making the label a co-branding tool. The labels are also used as logos by institutions such as product consortia or IDM Südtirol.

Users of the PGI and PDO labels may also use the South Tyrol brand – namely the South Tyrol Badgeon accompanying advertising material. The use of the brand on the product itself as well as on packaging and labels is not allowed.

Producers of South Tyrol seal of quality products

Producers of food use the "Quality South Tyrol" label to mark their certified products. This applies to packaging or product-related communication, but strictly within the context of the product itself. Visually, this label is based on the South Tyrol brand.

These producers are not permitted to use the South Tyrol brand. However, the “A company from South Tyrol seal may be used in corporate communication (email signature, website footer, business documents, etc.).

Advertising agencies

Advertising agencies that create layouts for their clients have access to various brand elements. However, this is only allowed if their client is already a registered brand licensee. Advertising and communication agencies in South Tyrol can also apply for the “A company from South Tyrol” seal, which may be used for co-branding together with the letterhead.

Sponsorship

Through sponsorship, the Provincial Department of Economic Development supports events, athletes, and teams to enhance the positive image and awareness of the region and its quality products.

Following the principle of "support in exchange for public visibility," sponsorship can be requested and is granted if it meets the established guidelines.

Further information on sponsorship opportunities can be found on the Department of Economic Development's website (https://wirtschaft.provinz.bz.it).

Institutions

The South Tyrol brand or the quality seal is also used as a "sender" – serving as the carrier of the conveyed message. Currently, this approach is applied by IDM South Tyrol as well as by relevant provincial institutions.

Additionally, these institutions are permitted to use elements of the umbrella brand’s visual identity, such as the South Tyrol wordmark, the South Tyrol panorama, the South Tyrol colors, or the South Tyrol typeface family.

The review and authorization of graphics by Brand Management are mandatory in this process.

Other production and service companies

To emphasize their connection to the South Tyrol location, companies in the production and service sectors are permitted to use the label "A company from South Tyrol." This location label is applied in conjunction with the company's address block.

Companies with their business headquarters in South Tyrol can register for the use of the location label. However, since the label does not indicate any certification or assessment of the company, its products, or services, it may not be used in direct association with products, services, or their promotion.

The seals for foodstuff

For agricultural products, in addition to the South Tyrol quality seal, the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) and DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) labels are also used. What all these certifications have in common is that they guarantee tested, high-quality standards.

The South Tyrol seal of quality

The South Tyrol seal of quality may only be used for food and agricultural products from South Tyrol whose quality is considerably higher than the legal standards require. The seal guarantees expert craftsmanship, tried-and-tested quality, and the verifiable South Tyrolean origin of the products.

Südtiroler Apfel PGI

Seventeen South Tyrolean apple varieties bear the EU PGI (protected geographical indication) seal. These apples must come from South Tyrolean orchards which are cared for in line with integrated or organic farming principles.

Alto Adige PDO Wine

The controlled designation of origin (DOC - Denominazione di Origine Controllata) guarantees that winemakers adhere to strict regulations in wine production. These regulations cover everything from maximum yield limits in the vineyard and permitted grape varieties to ensuring the highest quality in the bottle.

Speck Alto Adige PGI

The geographical indication PGI guarantees that the product is made using traditional methods in South Tyrol. The PGI criteria cover every step of the production process – from selecting the meat, through smoking, to the final product – and are assessed by independent supervisory bodies.

Schüttelbrot Alto Adige PGI

Schüttelbrot is unique and carries the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication - g.g.A.) seal. This quality label not only signifies its strong connection to the region but also ensures the careful preservation of traditional baking methods. It guarantees the highest quality and an unmistakable taste.
